Ronald Joseph Porta, 72, Altoona, died Monday at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home after an extended illness.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph V. and Thelma M. (Hillard) Porta. On May 23, 1970, he married Eileen A. Baumgartner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altoona.
Surviving are his wife, Eileen; three children: Debra A. (Ben) Dent of Altoona, Cindy M. (Doug) Clark of Pittsburgh and Zachary J. (Heather) Porta of Altoona; a sister, Thelma Kopas of Hastings; his mother-in-law, Ann Baumgartner of Hollidaysburg; nine grandchildren: Kordelle Dent, Macie Dent, Dakota Dent, Jordan Clark, Joshua Clark, Colton, Adam, Brayden and Danielle Porta.
Ron was a 1967 graduate of Altoona Area High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as an SN in the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal. He retired in 2002 as a service technician at Citizens Bank, Altoona, with 22 years of service. He previously worked for Butterick, Conrail and Diebold. He was a member of St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Altoona, and the Bavarian Aid Society.
He enjoyed fishing, playing on his computer, movies and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no public visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, 2021, at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Catholic Church, Altoona, Father D. Timothy Grimme, celebrant.
Committal rites will be held at Grandview Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Pennsylvania Humane Society, 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602.
Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home, Altoona.
