Eugene Anthony “Gene” Boyle, 96, of Altoona, died Tuesday at Wynwood House in Boalsburg after a brief illness. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Donald E. and Anna (Stalter) Boyle.

He married Mildred J. “Millie” O’Connor on Oct. 27, 1951, at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Altoona. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2017.

Gene retired in 1986 as a block operator at Conrail with 40 years of service.

He was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona.

Gene was a 1945 graduate of Altoona High School and a member of the American Legion, Marine Corps League and St Leo’s Holy Name Society. He enjoyed all sports — especially baseball — yard work and reading.

He served as a corporal in the U.S. Marines in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during WWII.

Gene is survived by a daughter-in-law, Debbie Boyle of State College; a sister, Patricia Ann Conroy of Commerce, Mich.; a grandson, Nicolas P. (Mary) Boyle; and four great-grandchildren: Mackenzie Ann, Blythe Andrea, Roark Patrick and Vanora Hazel Boyle, and twins due in September.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Boyle; two infants; and two siblings, Daniel M. Boyle and Margaret M. Donnelly.

At Gene’s request, visitation will be private for family only.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona, with Monsignor Stanley B. Carson as celebrant.

Committal Rites and Military Honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.

Arrangements are by Jones Funeral Home, Altoona.
