Gerald L. “Woody” VanOrmer, 78, of Altoona, died Monday at UPMC Altoona after a brief illness. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Oscar L. and Marian (Gutzwiller) VanOrmer. He married Linda A. Krider Aug. 15, 1964, at First Church of Christ, Altoona. She preceded him in death April 13, 2016.

He retired as a carman/welder at Conrail, Altoona with 25 years of service.

Woody attended school in the Altoona Area School District. He was a member of Newburg Volunteer Fire Association, past member of Bavarian Aid Society and UVA. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren, riding his motorcycle, karaoke, dancing and Elvis. He was known for his kind heart and always wanted to help people.

He served in the U.S. Army and Pennsylvania National Guard.

Woody is survived by three children: Gerald L. (Dana) VanOrmer of Altoona, Sheryl A. VanOrmer and Lori A. (Heath) Moore, both of Tyrone; a brother, William E. VanOrmer of Smithfield, Ky.; and a sister, Candy M. (Cliff) Bjorkstrand of Altoona. Woody is also survived by six grandchildren: Felisha, Chelsea and Mitchell VanOrmer, Allison Willinski and Avalyn and Rowan Moore.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Diana L. VanOrmer; a sister, Elaine M. Patterson; brother-in-law, James Patterson; and sister-in-law, Elizabeth VanOrmer.

At Woody’s request, there will be no visitation or services. A memorial get-together will be held at a later date.
