Jeldo J. “Jill” Evangelisto, 98, of Altoona, died Friday at UPMC Altoona. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Carmen Anthony and Maria (Durante) Evangelisto.
He married Marjorie M. Prosperi on June 13, 1942, at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Altoona. She preceded him in death.
He retired in 1982 as an industrial engineer at Conrail after 42 years of service. He previously was a blacksmith with the Pennsylvania Railroad.
Jill was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona.
He was a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School, and attended the University of Tampa, Tampa, Fla.
Jill was a member of the Cathedral and Jubilate Deo choirs, a life member of the Bavarian Aide Society and was a contributor to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
He enjoyed his family, flying, bowling, cooking and golf.
He served in the South Pacific and Christmas Island in the U.S. Army Air Force in WWII.
Jeldo is survived by three sons: Thomas J. “TJ” (Collette) Evangelisto of Fort Myers, Fla., Gary A. (Denise) Evangelisto of Altoona and Richard M. (Lisa) Evangelisto of Evans, Ga.; and a sister, Helen Robb of Baltimore, Md. He is also survived by five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Jeldo was preceded in death by five siblings: Albert Evangelisto, Josephine Risoldi, Frank Evangelisto, Louis Evangelisto and Carmella Prucha.
A funeral Mass will be held at a later date with Monsignor Stanley B. Carson officiating.
Committal rites were held at Calvary Cemetery, Altoona.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation.
